Mozambique School Project
Background
Positive Mozambique’s Escolinha Nhassanana project works with 40 disadvantaged Mozambican children who live in the poor Josina Machel neighbourhood of Inhambane. The children are aged 3-6 years old, there are 22 girls and 18 boys divided into two groups; 3-4 years and 5-6 years old. The school provides education for these children in an area where early years education is otherwise hard to get. This helps prepare the children for primary education, and also providing childcare allowing the parents to earn a living. By providing this service Escolinha Nhassanana offers disadvantaged children a head start through an education programme that encourages learning and establishes a daily routine.
At the time that Basic Foundations started working with the organisation it had successfully engaged a few funding streams to sustain the school but not to increase its capacity. This was of particular importance as their was an ever-growing wait list for the school.
Project
Through our Project Coordinators, Lucy and Chris, who were based in Mozambique at the time, Basic Foundations agreed to support to build a second classroom, a kitchen and bread oven as well as a sheltered eating area for the children and dorms for those children who travel from further away. Lucy and Chris oversaw the project, which was implemented directly by Positive Mozambique using local materials and labour. The bread oven was set up quickly which allowed the school not only to provide more free food to the students but also to sell bread and raise money for the running of the school. The second classroom followed, increasing the school's capacity by up to 40 more students. Finally they built the sheltered area and a few basic dorm rooms.
