Madagascar Hospital for Disabled Children

Background

The Madagascar Centre for Motor Rehabilitation (Centre de Rééducation Motrice de Madagascar) has been working with patients, primarily children, with leg and spinal disabilities for more than 60 years. It is the only centre of its kind in Madagascar, and often the only source of care available nationally for disabled children or adults. As a charitable organisation, the centre also ensures that payment is never a barrier to medical support.

The centre provides diagnostics, surgery, physiotherapy as well as other rehabilitation medical support. The centre also makes shoes and prosthetic limbs for disabled people to support their mobility after they have received medical support.

In addition to providing essential medical care, the centre provides training and employment opportunities to disabled people.

The Project

The centre has the capacity to work with 50 children, but was in need of kitchen furniture such as table and chairs as well as kitchen equipment and utensils to ensure that the children could stay at the centre to convalesce from surgery or to receive longer term physiotherapy. Previous to the project the only equipment or furniture available was donated by the staff or other members of the community and was insufficient and in need of replacing.

Basic Foundations bought chairs and tables for 50 patients as well as crockery. The project also supplied cooking equipment and utensils. This has meant that patients can eat together, rather than on their own in their rooms, and that children who aren't able to go to school can socialise and spent time with other children as they convalesce.
